Thank you

I have received a thank you card from the nice people at the REFER networking group following my talk and cupcake demonstration last Wednesday -  how sweet!  One of the organiser called my session 'enchanting'....

Easter cakes

This is the cake I made for the Easter photoshoot for the Birmingham Mail/Post.  I wanted the sides of the cake to represent branches with a nest of eggs on the top!

Interview with a food writer

The food writer for the Birmingham Mail and Post has just left - what a nice man! (I actually mean that and am not just saying it so he will write a nice article about me - honest)

His name is Richard McComb and we had a very enjoyable chat, a cuppa and a cupcake.  Strangely enough he only lives round the corner from me and I walk by his house most days...

I will post the article (if and) when it comes out!

A photographer from the Birmingham Mail/Post has just been to take pictures of me!

I'd prepared some Easter-y delights (which Neil, the photographer, accidentally put his finger in!) and he took an array of shots... fake taking cakes out of the oven, fake leaning nonchalantly against the kitchen cabinets etc.  The worst one was where I had to put my head really close to the table and cakes, lean on my arm while looking up and smiling - don't envy those model types.

Here's the kitchen with some cakes before the 'shoot'

Neil was very nice and even posed for a fake picture for the blog

This is the set up for the final shot.  Imagine, to the right, a big round face wearing a false smile....

I don't think I have any more smiles left in me today..... I wonder what is in store for me tomorrow...

My First Demonstration

Today I did something I am scared of.... public speaking!  I've always disliked talking in public and would always do what ever I could to get out of it but when a local networking group, REFER, invited me to speak at their birthday event I decided to face my fear!

REFER creates regular networking opportunities for ladies of influence in the Midlands financial services sector market and I was asked to talk and demonstrate some cupccake decorating then participate in a workshop for the attendees.

The event was held in Cobbetts' beautiful offices in Colmore Square.  Here are some shots of the room laid out in tables ready for the event and workshop.
My table!
Some cupcakes I'd brought along for inspiration

Amazingly I wasn't that nervous before I spoke (I think I did speak quickly but we were running out of time so that's my excuse!) and it seemed to go well, I even got a few laughs at my jokes!  And soon it was time for the workshop.
We decided to go with a Masterchef style challenge with each team having the same 'ingredients' and equipment and each team member having to decorate a cupcake
Here are some of the ladies at work!
(I like this photo as the ladies are smiling and look like they're having a nice time!)
And here are some of the decorated cakes - they were really good!
So my first demonstration is over and it looks like there may be an opportunity to do a similar demo at the Radisson in Birmingham - most exciting!

I wish I could say I'm going to spend the rest of the evening relaxing and watching Glee but something is happening tomorrow so I must prepare.....

Cute cupcake stand

I love this little cupcake stand!  It's from Barnitts and would make any cupcake look super cute!

(shall I buy one?...I don't really need one...but it would be lovely to just own it...where's my credit card....)

Aprons and Minds in unison

There are often funny 'moments' between my husband and myself...we text and email each other at the same time, plan the same events for the weekend, buy the same cards for each other but yesterday was a particularly good one...

There was a delivery to the house, two packages from the same company - one addressed to me, one addressed to him.  I knew mine was a customised apron that I'd ordered for myself a few weeks ago and it turns out Dave had ordered me a customised apron too - ordered and delivered on the same day!  Weird or what?!

Our minds weren't quite in unison as he order a natural coloured apron (so the marks wouldn't show!) and I ordered a white one (for best!)

Maybe Dave and I spend too much time together....

And modelling them of course:

Blog mention!!

Ahh, I got a mention on someone else's blog - how nice!  They were making a football cake and they used Dave's indenters technique, check it out http://giovannascakes.blogspot.com/2010/03/football-ball-cake.html

Football Cake Markers

I was putting these 'tools' away for safe keeping this morning and thought I should give a little shout out to the maker.... my husband, Dave, is my unofficial construction department, ideas man and delivery boy!  My method of making a football cake is to cover with white sugarpaste then indent the shapes, mark the stitching then paint.  In order to indent the proper shapes Dave made me two 'indenters' - one pentagon and one hexagon to make the truncated icosahedron shape of a football... how smart is he?

You start by indenting the pentagon on the top of the sugarpaste sphere (before it 'dries') followed by five hexagons around it.  Then inbetween each of two adjoining hexagons indent a pentagon with hexagons all around it and keep going until all the area is covered.  Make sure you get your measurements correct!

I finally succumbed and added Caroline's Cake Company to Facebook!

I've had a personal Facebook account for years but I thought it was a bit unprofessional and inappropriate to have pictures of me down the allotment covered in mud while trying to promote and sell delicious cakes!

You can find my Facebook page here

Please check me out and become a fan!
